Abstract

This thesis is made on the pictures published in the libertarian periodicals that circulated in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo between 1900 and 1924, focusing the analysis on the representations of the female and of the male. It reflects on the dimension of the images in the social dynamics lived by anarchist militants, considering not only the libertarian practice and the social experience, but also the question of perception and of sensitiveness. It contemplates, beyond a reflection on the set of ideas and a perspective of genre, the ways of seeing, of thinking, of feeling, of imagining, of representing, as of the visual and verbal images (re)built/diffused by the libertarians, scrutinizing the libertarian experience through the angle of the representations and its dialogue with the imaginary plane, thus defining as tributary of the Culture and Representation line of research. Enrolled in the field of Social History in the measure that it discusses a social group with particular dimensions and traces and its proposal of revolutionary change, the thesis keeps interconnection with other historiographic fields, like the Cultural History and the Political History. When considering the pictures in the labor press with literary tone, it intends not only to contribute to deepen the studies between History and Image, but to open other possibilities in the historiography dedicated to the field of culture in the anarchist movement, conferring a position of highlight in the literary practice. The proposed temporal clipping is explained by the fact of having been in the first decades of the 20th century that the anarchist ideas and practices in Brazil had the greatest repercussion, flourishing a libertarian press of impact and expression, picture circulation media, main source of the developed work
