Aspectos culturais e lingüísticos da londonização do Brasil no século XIX: o hibridismo cultural em João do Rio

Abstract

The present work searches for the linguistic-historiographical relationship of the influence of the English language and English culture in the national language and culture in the XIX century and in the first decades of the XX century. Considering language a historical-cultural artifact, our study is based on the past-present conjuncture and established in theoretical and methodological supports of History, Linguistic Historiography and Cultural Studies The particular use of the fundamental concepts of the Linguistic Historiography helped to establish the limits of the analysis development as it was experienced in the selected corpus a play, a novel and selected chronicles written by João do Rio (João Paulo Alberto Coelho Barreto s nickname, 1881 1921). The particular way of instituting the general climate of opinion allowed us to study primarily the historical moment and the place of culture in the colonial and neocolonial context, and secondly, to verify the urban culture and the elite involved in the context, influenced by the aristocratic French-English model - understanding the interaction between center-periphery. We traced not only a historiographical path of the social-cultural references related to England but also the linguistic assimilations (the use of the English terms) in the period of our interest. After reading, selecting, ordering, interpreting and reconstructing the primary sources, we found common elements which were grouped in correlate classes presented in accordance with the events selected in the climate of opinion. Therefore, it was nominated the categories of analysis of the corpus: the fascination with the foreign habits (English) established the cultural aspect, and the verification of a number of cases of the use of expressions in the English language, as well as references of the English culture found in João do Rio s writings created the category of the linguistic aspects. The results achieved in this research confirmed its main objective to contribute to the definition of a method for the Historiography of the English cultural influence in the Brazilian- Portuguese language and the Brazilian culture. For that reason, we determine we have reached our objectives and contributed to the area of research we are associated with.
